Cin-Emma Extra: The triumph of the movie musical

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Whether is 1985 or 2024, musicals have long been a box office staple.

KOIN 6 resident movie buff Emma Jerome shared some of her favorite films to sing and dance along to, starting with the brand new Mean Girls musical.

Next, Jerome breaks down her three main categories of movie musical:

1) Musicals that were on Broadway first

Great example: Grease (1978), debuted on Broadway in 1972.

2) Originals which could have made their way to the stage, but they were movie musicals first.

Great example: Footloose (1984, 2011), debuted on Broadway in 1998.

3) Musicals which have source material from some third party

Great example: Rent (2005), debuted on Broadway in 1996, based on the opera “La bohème” composed by Giacomo Puccini.

For movie musicals for the beginner, Jerome recommends the jukebox musical. Examples include:

  • Rock of Ages (2012), featuring the glam metal sounds of the 80s

  • Burlesque (2010), about a young woman who moves from Iowa to Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a dancer.
