Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center's main campus in Avondale has opened its new emergency department and urgent care center.

The emergency department is located in the hospital's new Critical Care Building (Location G) on Lower Level 2. At 90,000 square feet, the department is triple the size of its previous location.

The $600 million Critical Care Tower was completed earlier in the year, though hospital officials had previously said it would not admit new patients until November. The tower expansion is 632,500 square feet of clinical space.

It was the largest construction project in the Cincinnati region since Paul Brown Stadium in 2000.

According to a release, the new facility features embedded imaging services so pediatric patients can receive MRIs, X-rays, CT scans or ultrasounds without the need to travel to a separate building.

The emergency department and urgent care will also be able to fill medications at the onsite 24-hour pharmacy. There's also "state-of-the-art" mental health treatment rooms, according to a release.

Additionally, the emergency department will feature:

  • 60 treatment rooms, including five trauma bays.

  • A decontamination center.

  • A research lab.

  • Two trauma elevators with direct access to the helipad and intensive care.

Garage parking for the emergency department and urgent care is now open, accessible via Burnet Avenue.
