Cincinnati Country Day, UC baseball product Cam Alldred called up to MLB's Pirates

Cam Alldred is headed to The Show.

The Cincinnati Country Day and University of Cincinnati baseball product has been called up to the Pittsburgh Pirates, according to Cincinnati Country Day Associate Athletic Director Greg Ross, who spoke with Alldred early Wednesday morning.

The left-hander is the first Cincinnati Country Day baseball player to make it to the majors, according to Ross.

"I am so proud of this kid and all the hard work he has put in to see his dreams come true," Ross said in a Tweet.

Alldred was drafted by the Pirates in the 24th round of the 2018 MLB Draft.

“That phone call was probably the best moment of my life. It’s just all surreal," Alldred told The Enquirer's Adam Baum after being selected with the 714th overall pick.

Alldred has spent the last five years (four seasons) in the Pirates' farm system. In 2018, he was on the Class-A West Virginia Power (now the Charleston Dirty Birds) and posted a 1.63 ERA in 18 appearances with the West Virginia Black Bear of the MLB Draft League.

In 2019, Alldred went 4-1 in 39 relief appearances with a 4.20 ERA for the Class-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.

After the 2020 minor league seasons were canceled to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alldred spent the 2021 season with the Double-A Altoona Curve and Triple-A Indianapolis Indians, combining for a 2.18 ERA in 33 relief outings.

Alldred was one of 28 non-roster invitees to Pirates' Spring Training in March before starting the season in Indianapolis. In eight appearances with the Indians this spring, Alldred posted a 1.53 ERA with 15 strikeouts over 17 ⅔ innings.

He made his first Triple-A start on April 23, tossing a career-high four shutout innings in a no-decision against the Columbus Clippers. He earned his first Triple-A win on April 29 against the Iowa Cubs, firing 2 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.

Alldred will be the first pick from the 24th round of the 2018 MLB Draft to make his big-league debut when he appears in a game.

At Cincinnati Country Day from 2013-2015, Alldred was 7-1 for his prep career with a 0.37 ERA, striking out 149 batters over 104 ⅔ innings. He was also a career .494 prep hitter with 23 doubles, three homers and 57 RBI.

He was a two-time All-Ohio and Miami Valley Conference player of the year selection and was the Ohio Division IV player of the year in 2015. That season, he was 7-1 with a 0.37 ERA and struck out 22 batters over 12 innings in a 2-1 win over Western Reserve Academy on April 11, 2015. He also hit .513 on the year with 21 extra-base hits (15 doubles, five triples, one home run) and 30 RBI.

Alldred led Cincinnati Country Day to district championships and regional runner-up finishes in 2014 and 2015. He then spent three seasons with the University of Cincinnati Bearcats, making 38 appearances (18 starts), going 7-5 with a 4.55 ERA.
