Cincinnati football adds Arizona State transfers Carter Brown and D.J. Taylor

On the first day new Bearcats coach Scott Satterfield's recruiting department was announced, the new staffers raided the Valley of the Sun for a pair of transfers, bringing the number of former Arizona State Sun Devils on the roster to three.

Quarterback Emory Jones, who played one year in Tempe and was previously was a Florida Gator, was already here. By Monday afternoon, teammates Carter Brown and D.J. Taylor had joined him.

Carter Brown fills void at kicker for Bearcats

Brown fills the void at kicker created when Ryan Coe entered the portal and left for North Carolina. Brown just recently entered the portal with Jones recommending him to the Bearcat staff.

"I had talked to Emory and he got me in touch," Brown said. "It just went pretty quick from there to be honest."

As a freshman at Arizona State, he displayed solid results making 11-of-14 field goals and all 33 of his PATs. He had a long field goal of 53 yards and began his college career by taking Pac-12 Special Teams Player of the Week honors. Brown committed to UC minus a visit, but will be there by the end of this week.

In his first college game against Northern Arizona he made all four of his field goals and all four of his point-afters in a 40-3 victory.

"Hopefully, we're kicking a lot of PATs," Brown said. "It's definitely a good opportunity. I'm actually real excited about how all of this came about. I'm ready to get there and get to work."

Brown also has family from Ohio in the Portsmouth area that can now travel to his home games without fear of a flight delay.

"Both of my grandparents live in Portsmouth, that was a big thing," Brown said. "They can get to games easier as well as some aunts and uncles and cousins."

In high school, Brown was a three-year starter at Dawson High in Texas where he made 37 of his 43 field goals and 137-of-148 PATs with a long field goal of 51 yards. He replaces Coe who was 19-for-23 for the Bearcats with a long of 52 while making all 44 of his PATs.

Coe did not kick in the Fenway Bowl with that spot taken by Christian Lowery. Cole Smith, Alex Bales and Lowery were a combined 13-of-19 in 2021 making 67-of-69 PATs. Brown was ranked a three-star recruit out of high school by 247Sports.com and the No. 9 kicker. He was a MaxPreps First Team All-State selection in Texas.

Brown is from Houston and just watched the basketball Bearcats lose to the top-ranked Cougars.

"That's not going to happen in football," he said.

D.J. Taylor another former Sun Devil headed to Cincinnati

Not long after Brown announced his intentions, his former Sun Devil teammate D.J. Taylor joined the fold. A 5-foot-10 cornerback from Tampa Catholic High in Florida, he has been at Arizona State three seasons and is a redshirt junior. His specialty has been returning kicks as he's averaged 24.5 yards over his three years. That includes a 100-yard return for a touchdown his freshman year. He also has averaged 9.1 yards on punt returns.

Defensively, he had 16 tackles this past season and one tackle for loss.

"Emory is the guy who's played in the SEC," Satterfield said on signing day. "He's won big games in the SEC. I do think he's got a tremendous upside. He's got a lot of talent. He's got a really good arm and he can run as well. So it kind of fits what we want with that. I also believe it's important to be able to land a quarterback of hiscaliber at this stage to be able to help us in the wide receiver room."
