Cincinnati Reds receive second straight off day after Phillies home opener postponed

PHILADELPHIA – The Cincinnati Reds had two rainouts within four hours Wednesday afternoon.

Their series finale against the Chicago Cubs was postponed to Sept. 1 as a split doubleheader, and Thursday's game in Philadelphia was preemptively postponed because of rain in the forecast for the Phillies' home opener.

“After consultation with Major League Baseball and the uncertain forecast (Thursday) between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., we have elected to move our home opener with the Reds to Friday," David Buck, the Phillies executive vice president, said in a statement Wednesday. "With the open date, we have the ability to reschedule the game for our fans."

Most teams in northern cities without a roof have an off day following their home opener in case of weather. Due to Thursday's postponement in Philadelphia, the Reds are now scheduled to play 20 consecutive games before their next off day.

The Phillies will have a pregame ceremony Friday celebrating their 2022 National League pennant. Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who led his team to the Super Bowl, is scheduled to throw the ceremonial first pitch.

It's been a slow start to the season for the Phillies, who opened with a 1-5 record for the first time since 2007.

"It’s going to be good to get home in front of our fans, get some energy and get going,” Phillies Manager Rob Thomson said.
