An African penguin at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has a new name in honor of former Cincinnati Reds shortstop and Hall of Famer Barry Larkin.

The zoo announced that for Larkin's birthday Friday, it has named the 6-week-old African penguin Larkin.

The chick was 2 weeks old when Cincinnati renamed a section of Mehring Way between Main Street and Broadway along Great American Ball Park to Barry Larkin Way. And according to a release, that gave the zoo's bird team leader, Rickey Kinley, the idea for the new chick's name.

Larkin (the penguin, not the baseball star) was hand-raised because he had trouble eating, despite multiple attempts by his parents to feed him. The zoo's bird team was able to help him learn how to eat.

Cincinnati Zoo visitors will be able to see Larkin in African Penguin Point sometime in May during the Zoo Babies festivities.
