Who doesn’t love a good story first thing in the morning? You’ll find me with my dogs and a good book every day at breakfast.
I’m Jeff Suess, The Enquirer’s history columnist, which means I also love to tell a good story. I never know what may give me an idea for a history piece – something I hear about that connects to Cincinnati in some way.
Reading a book about baseball great Rickey Henderson led me to look into the Great Migration’s impact on the Cincinnati Reds. Watching “American Graffiti” again – about my hometown, Modesto, California – sparked an essay on nostalgia.
Recently, I stumbled upon a headline for a bank robbery and kidnapping in Cincinnati in 1930 that appealed to this noir crime fan. It was something out of an old Cagney movie.
I thought it would be fun to track the rest of the story through the newspaper coverage and to share what I found the same way that it developed for readers at the time. Of course, I had the ability to search 50 years of clips to find out how it all turned out.

The Germania Society Oktoberfest is a Cincinnatian's yearly sign that the beginning of the end of summer is ... beginning. And it's happening this weekend, which triggers a landslide of Oktoberfests every weekend through mid-October.
