Cinnaminson Pushes Back First Day Of School Amid Pandemic

CINNAMINSON, NJ — The 2020-21 school year in Cinnaminson will start later than previously planned. The Cinnaminson Public School District Board of Education approved a resolution to delay the start of the school year by six days Tuesday night.

Students were originally slated to return to Cinnaminson public schools Sept. 2, but that start date has been pushed back to Sept. 8. Sept. 2 and 3 will now be professional development days. Previously scheduled professional development days on Feb. 12 and June 18 are now student days.

The changes were made as the district staff prepares for the upcoming school year. It’s a school year like no other, as districts are in the middle of deciding how they will bring students back to school.

The district has four sub-committees working on all aspects of the district's reopening plan, Superintendent Dr. Stephen Cappello said. There are skeletons of plans being discussed, but there are still a lot of questions remaining, he said.

On Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy said the Department of Education will provide guidance later this week for parents to allow for them to opt for all-remote learning for their children this fall. Read more here: NJ To Offer Remote-Learning Option For Schools Amid Coronavirus

In Cinnaminson, the district is working on a 100 percent remote learning plan, as well as three options for hybrid plans that would incorporate both in-person and remote learning, Cappello said.

There were no other updates about the plan provided Tuesday night, but Cappello said the district will reveal their plans under the governor's order that districts announce their plans one month before the first day of school. He said specifically the district would reveal their plan the first week of August.

Additionally, the Cinnaminson High School football team held its first practice on Tuesday. The NJSIAA permitted practices to begin one month earlier than usual, and competition for the fall season will begin one month later than usual, in October.
