Cities across area celebrating Independence Day

Jul. 1—The birthday of the United States of America will be celebrated across the region this weekend with parades, music and plenty of fireworks.

— The City of Heath has scheduled the Independence Day Parade for Saturday. Parade entry awards will be presented during a patriotic celebration immediately after the parade in Towne Center Park, featuring a live barbershop quartet and free popsicles and pie. Staging for the parade is at 8 a.m. at Amy Parks-Heath Elementary School, 330 Laurence Drive. Judging begins at 8:30 a.m., and the parade begins at 9 a.m.

Parade Award Categories include Best Float, Best Bicycle/Wagon/Stroller, Best Golf Cart/Off-Road Vehicle, Best Antique Car, Most Patriotic Pet, Most Spirited Overall and the Mayor's Choice Award.

— The City of Josephine is hosting Fireworks in the Park, starting at 4 p.m. Saturday at the city park, 201 Main St. The event will feature free unlimited carnival rides, a live band, splash pad, food trucks and vendors. Visitors can get their picture taken with Uncle Sam, Lady Liberty and Captain America. Vendors can sign up by Friday and additional information is available by calling 972-843-8282.

— Rowlett is hosting the Freedom 5K at 7 a.m. Monday along with a 1-mile fun run and an available virtual option, starting and finishing at the Rowlett Area Chamber, 4418 Main St. Vendor booths and a food truck will also be on hand. Additional information is available at www.rowlett5k.com

— Rockwall Parks and Recreation is hosting the Fourth of July Parade and Fireworks on Monday. The parade is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. at Utley Middle School and end at Dobbs Elementary. The day is expected to include a parachute jump, live music beginning at 7 p.m. and fireworks at dusk. Additional information is available at playrockwall.com

— The Rowlett Parks and Recreation Department is hosting Fireworks On Main, starting at 5 p.m. Monday at Pecan Grove park, 5300 Main St. The event will feature food, a Kid Zone and live music from Texas High Road, Blaze Of Glory and the Emerald City Band, followed by a fireworks show at approximately 9:30 p.m.
