City of Amarillo candidate filings for the week of Feb. 5, 2023

More candidates have applied for the ballot for the Amarillo City Council and Amarillo mayor in the upcoming May 6 election. Other interested candidates have until the close of business on Feb. 17.

In the election race for mayor, Place 2 Councilmember Freda Powell has announced her candidacy, as well as Tonya Winston and Jeffrey McGunegle.

Amarillo City Council member Howard Smith announced earlier he will not seek a fourth term in this spring's municipal elections, joining councilmember Eddy Sauer and Mayor Ginger Nelson as the third member of the Amarillo City Council not to seek reelection. Councilmember Cole Stanley has not yet announced his election plans.

The official candidate filings for places on the ballot, as of Feb. 3 online on the city's website, include the following:

  • No applications currently under review.

The names on this list have been verified by the city of Amarillo secretary's office. Applications received will be added as soon as the city verifies the eligibility of a candidate and the completeness of their application, in accordance with state law and the city charter. Applications must be notarized, the fee paid (or petition in lieu of fee included) and in the possession of the city secretary by 5 p.m. Feb. 17. If mailed, it must be received by 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17. (A postmark is not sufficient to meet state law).

Citizens interested in filing for a place on the city council ballot for the May election can pick up a candidate packet from the city secretary’s office in Room 303 of City Hall, 601 S. Buchanan. The packet includes a combination of information and forms combined to help guide potential candidates through the election process.
