You’d think mixtapes may be a thing of the past, but not for the City of Boston.

The city has launched its own version of the popular 1980s trend called Citywide Mixtape, which is “a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting our talented local artists,” according to Mayor Michelle Wu, who collaborated with the City’s Tourism, Sports and Entertainment Office to present the city’s first-ever mixtape.

Links to listen the first mixtape volume, “Dear Summer Vol. 1,″ can be found here on the city’s website. The mixtape can be heard on Soundcloud, Mixcloud, YouTube and Spotify.

“Dear Summer Vol. 1″ features songs and mixes from artists and DJs from the greater Boston area, “highlighting the vibrancy of Boston’s communities,” Wu said.

“The initiative is part of the City’s commitment to a safe, healthy, joyful summer,” Wu said. “This new annual collaboration aims to build awareness of local creative talent, connect residents and families across neighborhoods through music, and celebrate summer.”

“Dear Summer Vol. 1″ is made up of “68 curated tracks collectively mixed together in order to represent various styles and genres, including Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, Blues, Alternative and Dance music, that have and continue to impact Boston’s cultural legacy,” city officials said.

Mixtapes were a popular trend in the 80s and early 90s, when music lovers would record their favorite music on cassette tapes, and then replay their musical compilations for enjoyment.
