Here are the top 4 stories today in Pawtucket:

  1. On Wednesday, the City of Pawtucket announced its purchase of the Apex property on Main Street for just under $17.7 million, after months of extensive mediation discussions. Mayor Don Grebien cites the acquisition as a major victory for the city, calling the unanimous decision "the next important step in continuing the redevelopment we have made so far in Pawtucket." However, the costs of cleaning up the site's environmental contamination have not been totally settled. (GoLocalProv)

  2. New England Institute of Technology has partnered with the city of Pawtucket, the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket, and Pawtucket Central Falls Development to provide greater access to higher learning opportunities for Pawtucket's students and adult learners. NEIT's new University Resource Center will be located downtown at 2 Bayley St. and serve as a hub where Pawtucket students can take a dedicated shuttle to the NEIT campuses in Warwick and East Greenwich. In addition to a shuttle waiting area, the center will house a community meeting space and a student lounge. (Valley Breeze)

  3. House of Hope’s plans for short-term and long-term tiny houses for the homeless have been shut down. The proposed ECHO Village (Emergency COVID Housing Opportunities), which would have been a temporary shelter situation for the homeless in Pawtucket during the pandemic, ran into building code compliance issues with the state.House of Hope had been finalizing plans and working to find a parcel of land in the city to utilize, but representatives were advised to pursue installing the structures in a larger indoor building rather than creating a village as originally planned.
