New City Camelot neighborhood celebrates Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah with Tashlich

For the 28th consecutive year, the Camelot neighborhood marked the Jewish New Year of Rosh Hashanah with an outdoor ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 17.

The community's Tashlich celebrated the year 5784 on the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashana began at sundown Friday, Sept. 15, and ended at sunset Sunday. Rosh Hashana opens the Jewish high holy days and is followed by Yom Kippur - the solemn day of introspection, fasting, and prayer for many - at sundown on Sept. 24.

During the outdoor Tashlich service, participants observed and took part in the Jewish custom of “throwing or casting away” pieces of bread or stones into a body of water, as they symbolically ask for forgiveness for sins of the past year and to be blessed for the new year.

The ceremony took place at the Camelot Lake on King Arthur Court between East Cavalry Drive and Long Meadow Drive. The service included a performance by Jacob Rapaport.
