City closer to the return of a once favorite restaurant

Many Wichitans will probably take comfort in knowing the city will have a new comfort food outlet soon.

Actually, it's an old favorite making an encore appearance. Work is moving along on the new Grandy's restaurant at 3409 McNiel Avenue just south of the Kell Freeway.

The owner, CD Richie LLC, purchased the property in March, received its tax permit from the Texas Comptroller's Office on Sept. 20 and has an estimated opening date of Nov. 1. Work on the building is continuing.

The restaurant with inside dining and a drive-thru window will be in the former location of Harvest Drug. The drug store moved to a new location about 12 years ago, and the old building has sat vacant.

It has been undergoing extensive renovation since the new owners acquired it.

Grandy's was founded by a pair of Dallas entrepreneurs in 1972 and catered to southern tastes for homestyle cooking, featuring fried chicken, chicken-fried steak and other regional favorites. Its cinnamon rolls became a favorite of patrons.

Grandy's was once in business on Kemp Boulevard. But that store closed years ago and the building became a smoke shop.
