City to collect and recycle tires at Mitchell landfill starting in September

Aug. 8—MITCHELL — The Mitchell landfill is gearing up to collect tires throughout September.

As part of a grant program with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR), the city will recycle the tires at the Mitchell Regional Landfill on the south edge of Mitchell, located at 41176 257th St.

According to Street and Sanitation Supervisor Kevin Roth, the city collected and recycled roughly 350 tons of tires at the landfill in 2019 — the most recent year the city took part in the DANR's tire recycling program.

"It's a good program. It helps keep tires out of ditches," Roth said.

Recycling tires can pose challenges because the rubber cannot be melted down and reused like many other recyclable items. Among some limited ways tires can be recycled are grinding them down to be reused for material in turf and playground surfacing.

After the tires are dropped off at the landfill, they will ultimately be shredded and recycled.

Tires from retailers or businesses will not be accepted, according to city officials.

City officials estimate the collection period will extend about four weeks throughout September. The city will release the official timeline of the tire collection period prior to September.
