A City Council incumbent has dropped his bid for reelection. Here's who will be on the ballot.

Flour Bluff and North Padre Island residents will have a new representative on the City Council within a few months.

Current City Councilman Greg Smith — who has served three terms — withdrew his application to run for reelection on Friday, according to the city secretary’s office.

Dan Suckley, a senior lending officer at American Bank, is now the lone candidate in the District 4 race.

Smith said Monday that his decision to withdraw was largely based on the time investment required to both run an election and serve on the council, in combination with having a growing number of grandchildren — the fifth due in October — and managing two businesses.

His experience on the council has been “truly one of a kind,” Smith said.

“One of the best things about it is being able to give back to the community,” he said. “To me, that would be the biggest reward. … For six years, I gave my all to this city and to make this city a community for all our people.”

He added that he plans to remain fully engaged as a councilmember for the remaining months of his tenure.

Suckley, 55, served for nearly 10 years on the Flour Bluff ISD board, between 2007 and 2016. He currently serves on the Visit Corpus Christi board.

“It’s going to be a large responsibility,” Suckley said. “District 4 is a significantly growing portion of our community.”

He’s working on learning more about the city’s projects and what needs to be accomplished, he added.

“I’ve got a passion for Corpus Christi, (and) have since I’ve lived here,” Suckley said. “I’d like to see our community continue to prosper and improve.”

City Councilman Ben Molina — who represents District 2 — is not seeking reelection.

The District 4 race will be the only one on the ballot with one candidate.
