One resolution authorizes application for a grant from the U.S. Justice Department for $942,000 to acquire body cameras for patrol officers. Police Chief Manuel Borrego said this application would act as a "backstop" for a similar application to the state. He said if the grants come through, the city would buy about 120 cameras for its officers.

Councilors also approved purchase of 36 assault shields for officers with a price tag of $122,364.

The council authorized purchase of 12 vehicle recognition cameras to the tune of $69,500.

In other business, councilors:

  • Held a public hearing in advance of the demolition of 17 dangerous structures.

  • Spent $311,565 for a new chiller for the Health District, which sustained significant damage from flooding.

  • Spent $30,000 for maintenance of the Storm Watch Tower at Castaway Cove.

  • Bought about 15 acres of undeveloped land near the Wichita River for $62,443.

  • Authorized a five-year contract with Falls Town Courts LLC for management services for Hamilton and Weeks Park Tennis/Pickleball Centers in the amount of $120,000.
