All-City football team: Danny O'Neil (offense), Mason Beriault (defense) players of year

Cathedral’s Danny O’Neil is the City offensive player of the year and Scecina’s Mason Beriault the defensive player of the year by a vote of the City coaches.

O’Neil, a junior quarterback, is completing 66.2% of his passes for 1,966 yards and 26 touchdowns with three interceptions for Class 6A second-ranked Cathedral (7-1) going into Friday’s sectional game vs. Lawrence North. He has also rushed for 252 yards and seven TDs.

Beriault, a senior safety, has 99 tackles, 8 ½ tackles for loss, three interceptions, two caused fumbles and two fumble recoveries for Class 2A third-ranked Scecina (9-1), which plays at Clarksville (5-5) Friday in Sectional 39. Beriault is also a major contributor on offense with 20 catches for 526 yards and five TDs.

In other individual awards, Covenant Christian senior Tony Flatt is the athlete of the year and Scecina’s Ott Hurrle the coach of the year.

Flatt is completing 62.4% of his passes for 1,786 yards and 24 TDs and has 271 rushing yards and 11 TDs. He also has 51 tackles, including 10 for a loss. The two-year starter at quarterback was a leader on the defensive side on the Class A state championship team as a sophomore with 142 tackles, including 16 ½ for a loss.

Hurrle, in his 31st season at Scecina, led the Crusaders to a regional championship last season. He led Scecina to 2A state titles in 1990 and ’91.
