Even before its opening date, the CITY Furniture showroom and warehouse in Plant City is a giant landmark visible from I-4.

That’s what the Florida furniture company was hoping for.

“Back in 2018, when they [CITY Furniture] came looking for potential pieces of land or sites that could accommodate that scale of an operation, they were clear about having a spot like that, visible from the interstate,” said Jake Austin, president and CEO of the Plant City Economic Development Corporation.

CITY Furniture in Plant City has yet to announce the exact date, but the 1.2 million-square-foot showroom, regional office, and distribution center is set to open in Plant City, right off I-4 in November.

Originally, the showroom was set to open in July, but supply chain issues and construction delays pushed the grand opening back.

“CITY recognizes that the enormous projected growth presents opportunities in Tampa for new housing, businesses and recreation for existing and future residents,” said CITY Furniture marketing director Caitlin Maribona.

Maribona said Tampa and surrounding areas are the furniture brand’s target market.

“The diversity and friendliness of its people, plus Tampa’s business friendly atmosphere and strategic location within the region made sense for us,” Maribona said.

According to the Florida-based furniture company, its opening will bring 500 jobs with average salaries ranging from $40,000 to $58,000.

These are higher than normal wages for Plant City, Austin said.

“These sorts of jobs, these are better paying positions, with benefits,” Austin said. “We expect that this will bring residential demand and bring in more people.”

The $125 million facility, which sits on previously unused land, will include a showroom featuring a CITY Marketplace, KC Wine Bar and a cafe for shoppers. Beer, wine and coffee will be available.

“We hope people will see this while driving and come in, visit our city,” Austin said.

There are no upcoming job fairs scheduled, but the company is actively looking for applicants, mainly in the distribution center. Any interested parties can apply online at jobs.cityfurniture.com.
