CITY Furniture to open new Plant City location

The massive CITY Furniture showroom in Plant City is set to open to shoppers on Dec. 1 at 5 p.m. and will be marked by ongoing grand opening events through Dec. 4, the company said.

The high visibility location along Interstate 4 and the numerous housing developments in Central Florida, contributed to CITY’s decision to locate in Plant City.

“During the grand opening event, CITY will speak about the community-wide effort that went into making this new showroom one of the largest furniture destinations in the state,” the release said.

The $125-million showroom will also have LED lighting throughout the more than 1.3 million-square-foot space as well as over 20 electric vehicle parking spaces for customers and the community to utilize to charge their vehicles.

The solar-ready facility will also utilize delivery trucks that run on natural gas.

In addition to furniture and décor showcased in its showroom and its warehouse, the company also placed a CITY KC Café and Wine Bar inside the facility.

“As we enter this new market, we’re excited to share everything CITY stands for as we are a company that continuously gives back to the causes and communities that mean so much to our CITY family,” said Andrew Koenig, CEO of CITY. “We can’t wait for residents of Plant City and the surrounding Tampa area to join us in the celebration of what is not only the largest furniture showroom in the U.S., but also the greenest.”

To promote its green initiative within the furniture retail industry, CITY will also give away a Tesla to a contestant that register at the grand opening who are over the age of 18 and a reside in Citrus, Hardee, Hernando, Highlands, Hillsborough, Manatee, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk or Sarasota counties.

The winner will be announced on March 4, 2023 at 2 p.m. at the CITY Plant City showroom.

Additional giveaways include $100 gift cards to the first 50 customers to arrive at the grand opening ribbon cutting. Food trucks and local vendors will also be on hand throughout the weekend.

CITY Furniture anticipates hiring 500 workers with average salary between $40,000 to $58,000, it said.

Started 51 years ago, the Tamarac-based CITY is a family-owned American furniture and mattress retailer and upholstery manufacturer.

The company’s roots date back to the 1970s when it opened its first Waterbed City store in Fort Lauderdale in 1971. The store was later converted into CITY Furniture in 1994 with the company evolving into a furniture and home accents destination over the years.

Today, CITY Furniture has 22 showrooms across the state and an expansive e-commerce site. CITY operates showrooms from Miami through Vero Beach, in Southwest and Central Florida, as well as 14 Ashley Home Store locations as the brand’s Southeast and Southwest Florida licensee.

“The team at CITY prides itself on carrying something for every taste, lifestyle and budget because a home should be as unique as the person who lives in it,” the release said.
