GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials with the City of Green Bay say they are beginning to start its annual water main flushing program.

According to a release, the flushing is expected to start on Monday, April 22, and is an important maintenance activity that helps to keep the drinking water system throughout the city clean and reliable.

Officials say that the flushing will involve utility crews opening a number of fire hydrants throughout the city and allowing water to flow at a high velocity as a way to remove any sediment or mineral buildup in water mains.

They add that this process may temporarily cause discoloration or cloudiness to water throughout the city but does not affect the water’s safety or quality.

The flushing program may cause temporary inconvenience to our customers, but it is necessary to maintain the safety and reliability of our drinking water system. We encourage customers to stay informed by checking the GIS map on our website and contacting us if they have any questions or concerns.

Businesses and residents are being advised to check their water before drinking, cooking, or laundering during this process and if water is discolored, officials recommend letting the water run for a few minutes until it is clear once again.

Officials with Green Bay Water say customers can find a GIS map on the Green Bay Water website that lets them see the flushing progress and provides information about which areas have been flushed and which areas are scheduled to be flushed.
