City Hall Lowers Flags To Half-Staff To Honor Longtime Secretary

GENEVA, IL — The city flag at the Geneva City Hall has been lowered to half-staff to honor the memory of a longtime city employee who died on Friday, city officials announced on Monday.

Lillian Skaar, 93, served as the executive assistant to several Geneva mayors, according to the city website. Skaar retired in 1988 after moving to Geneva in the 1950s. According to her obituary, Skaar was a homemaker and took care of her husband and five children until her children were grown. She then learned to drive and went to work for several Geneva mayors, which was — according to her obituary – a job she lived until she retired.

"Lillian’s retirement was announced in a local newspaper with a banner headline that proclaimed her “The Nicest Person on the Planet!!!,” her obituary reads. “The people who had the pleasure of knowing Lillian, including dozens of her children’s friends who gravitated to the Skaar household, would enthusiastically agree with that description."

A private ceremony will be held on Saturday following visitation, which will take place from 4-8 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home, located at 324 E. State St. in Geneva. Due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions, a limit of 50 people at a time will be required and visitors will be required to wear face-coverings.

“The City of Geneva would like to express its condolences to the Skaar family and friends for their loss,” city officials wrote on the city’s website on Monday.
