City man charged in Monday Schenectady stabbing; Victim required surgery, police say

SCHENECTADY — A city man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing Monday afternoon that sent the victim to Albany Medical Center, authorities said.

The victim suffered multiple wounds in the attack, causing injuries that required an operation, according to police accusations filed in court.

Mohammed D. Elniel, 46, of Steuben Street, was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree assault, a felony, accused of causing serious injury with a weapon.

The incident happened at about 1:18 p.m. Monday in a parking lot near the intersection of Albany and Hulett Streets, according to the police accusations.

Elniel is accused of using a knife to stab the victim, causing a cut and a stab wound that required the surgery, according to the filing.

Police based the charge in part on county surveillance footage that captured the incident and an oral admission by the defendant, according to the filing.

Elniel was arraigned and ordered held on $2,000 bail. He has since been released after posting the bail, officials said.

The incident happened around the same time as an incident on Becker, near McClellan Street where police investigated a report of a man with a gun. That incident led to the department's Special Operations Squad going into an address and to police detaining multiple people. Police also reported finding four firearms there in all, arresting one individual.
