City of Memphis to buy Las Savell Jewelry site, turn it into police, fire recruiting center

The city of Memphis plans to buy 61. S. McLean Blvd., the home of longtime Midtown jeweler Las Savell.

The city plans to buy the quarter-acre plot along McLean between Madison and Union avenues for $600,000, according to the Memphis City Council agenda for Tuesday. The city's legislative body is scheduled to vote and approve the purchase.

The City Council's agenda says the site will be used for a Public Safety Recruiting Center. The rear of Las Savell site borders the back of Memphis Fire Station No. 11 on Union Avenue, which means plans for a future recruiting center could include both pieces of land.
