City of Newburgh police report homicide at Varick Peterson Homes apartments

CITY OF NEWBURGH - City police said Friday morning they are investigating a homicide at the Varick Peterson Homes on South Street.

Police said officers responded to the apartment building at 10:20 p.m. Thursday following a 911 call and found a 76-year-old man dead with obvious signs of trauma.

James L. Rich, 35, of Newburgh, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, a felony. He was arraigned and sent without bail to Orange County Jail, pending further court action.

Police did not say what his motive was.

The dead man's name is not being released, pending notification of family members, police said. Police also did not identify the person of interest.

Police said the investigation is continuing, with the assistance of the Orange County District Attorney's office. Anyone with relevant information is asked to call the City of Newburgh Detective Division at 845-569-7509.
