City to offer blood lead testing Saturday for residents affected by fire fallout

Residents concerned about possibly having elevated lead levels in their blood because of the recent training fire fallout can get tested Saturday.

The Bloomington Fire Department will conduct tests at its headquarters, 225 S. College Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Firefighters were trained through a partnership with the Monroe County Health Department.

The city may make additional tests available if demand warrants, according to a news release.

The fire department on Nov. 5 burned a house at 1213 High St. as part of training exercises. Residents in the area reported dust and paint chips falling onto their neighborhoods, mostly west of the fire.

According to the news release, blood tests of firefighters showed "no detectable lead levels."

The city has created a website about the controlled burn and the aftermath. You can find more information at bloomington.in.gov/bfdburninfo.
