City officials provide updates on Unidad Park renovation

LAS CRUCES – The towers remain, and the splash pad is on the way.

With a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for late October, Interim Deputy Director of Public Works at the City of Las Cruces Tony Trivino told city councilors that progress on Unidad Park was on track.

During a city council work session on Monday, Trivino provided updates about the 2018 GO Bond projects, including Unidad Park. The park is on the corner of East Hadley Avenue and North Hermosa Street.

Of the myriad projects approved by voters, a renewal of Unidad Park was among the most noticed. So when construction began on the park in January of 2022, dozens turned out to wish the old park farewell.

Now, the $1.45 million project is nearing completion.

“We’re 81 percent complete,” Trivino told the council.

Trivino said the current completion date was Oct. 10, 2022. The restored “two towers,” replicas of the World Trade Center, were finished, as were the restrooms. In addition, workers had installed parts for the splash pad and completed 75 percent of the landscaping, according to Trivino.

Trivino said that difficulty obtaining materials and other supply chain issues delayed the project’s completion date, but, ultimately, workers should finish the park by Oct. 10.
