 KEY ACTION Approved the purchase of a heavy duty rescue pumper from Atlantic Emergency Solutions to replace older truck at the Orrville Fire Department.

DISCUSSION Orrville's rescue truck is among the busiest rescue vehicles in Wayne county. Councilman Rick Aspiras Jr. explained at a previous meeting that this purchase is being paid for through the city's capital fund. The new vehicle is projected to arrive in 2026, and there is a constant increase in the price. “The last truck we bought was $580,000 and now over $800,000,” Aspiras said.

OTHER ACTION Approved a resolution to initially seek a grant from the Department of Energy through American Municipal Power to install Smart Grid meters. The Smart electrical grid project will start in 2024 and cover 90% of utility customers. Utilities Director Jeff Brediger said it will provide different services like planning and redesigning the distribution system.

Orrville Service Department Superintendent Ryan Immel presented the annual report of his department’s activities in 2022.

  • The city spent $158,555 on street maintenance. The highest expense was the chip and seal work done by Melway Paving Co., which cost $68,278. While the lowest expense was traffic and street lights, which cost $3,441.

  • Roughly 12 basins were repairs at a cost of $15,063, almost the same cost as cleaning, which was $15,785.

  • The amount of fuel consumption dropped to 20,464 gallons of unleaded gas with a total cost of $49,709, and 16,138 gallons of Diesel with a cost of $45,659.

  • Mosquito control program expenses totaled $28,584, on par with the 2021 cost.

  • Tree work totaled over $75,400, which included purchasing 150 tulip seedings for Orrville Elementary School. The Arbor Day tree was dedicated in honor of former Safety and Service Director Bill Stocker.

  • The department purchased 996,670 tons of road salt to be used during the snow season. About half of the salt amount is stored in the new salt bin that was constructed last year.

  • The splash pad and Zip Kruze projects as well as the new restroom, bridges, benches, picnic tables, and other park maintenance cost amounted to $162,700.

  • Immel said the department is continuing to replace old bins and benches in the walking trail area.
