Shelby City Parks recently participated in a national celebration of park systems and the options they give to their communities.

National Kids to Parks Day is a daylong celebration of outdoor play hosted in late May. The day is meant to encourage young people to discover new ways to enjoy local, state and national parks.

"This is something we did one year before COVID happened, and we are excited to get back to doing again," said Dee Greene, programs superintendent at Shelby City Parks. "Our park is more than just sports. We have a variety of things. We do have sports, but we also have the pool. We have the carousel. We host events. We have picnic shelters and places people can go and walk. We have, I think, something for everybody here."

The Shelby Kids to Parks celebration took place at the park's carousel, and both the carousel and train provided rides throughout the event. Children also played in a bounce house, got balloon animals made for them or and met popular cartoon characters Scooby Doo and Marshall of Paw Patrol.

Also participating in this year's event were Clifford's Army Rescue Extravaganza, which brought dogs available for adoption to the park, along with multiple child care and health care organizations.
