City releases more body cam, dash cam footage from E.L. shooting in April

EAST LANSING — City officials on Monday released hours of additional video footage related to the shooting of a man by police outside an East Lansing store in April.

Seven of the clips released Monday were extracted from officer body cameras, while two others were taken from patrol vehicle dash cameras. Officials said they would release more video later this week, once they've finished reviewing it and making necessary redactions.

The released videos can be viewed on the city's website.

“As a part of our commitment to transparency, and per a request from the East Lansing Independent Police Oversight Commission, we are releasing all extended video footage captured by the responding officers’ body-worn cameras, as well as the ELPD fleet video footage,” East Lansing Police Chief Kim Johnson said in a news release.

DeAnthony VanAtten, 20, was shot in the parking lot of the Lake Lansing Road Meijer store on April 25 after officers responded to a report of a man with a gun.

A caller reported seeing a man with his face mostly covered run to the grocery entrance, run back to his car, take a gun out of the car and then run back to the store's entrance.

VanAtten, who is Black, was shot twice and taken into custody on a probation violation warrant while still in the hospital. He later was transferred to the Ingham County Jail and has since been released from custody.

Two officers fired their weapons at VanAtten and are on leave. A loaded handgun was found beneath a parked car, near where VanAtten was shot, video indicated.

The Michigan Attorney General's Office is reviewing a state police investigation of the incident.

The city released video from police body and dash cameras on May 5 and video clips from security cameras inside the store on May 16. Some of that footage is included in Monday's release. Recordings of the initial 911 calls about a man with a gun also were released.

The recordings being released this week are extended clips from cameras worn by the four officers who responded to the initial dispatch, along with footage from vehicle dash cameras, officials said in Monday's release. Video from a sergeant's body camera also is being released, they said.

Some faces, license plates and audio are being redacted, as the law requires, they said.
