Election day is slowly but surely drawing to a close, and the polling stations continue to see a steady flow of voters. This year, there's a total of approximately 17,500 registered voters in Salisbury about 1,000 more than four years ago.

Those showing up to vote are a good mixture of young and old, Salisbury City Clerk Kim Nichols said. Throughout the day, each of the five polling stations all of which were busy have remained well-staffed and void of any technical issues.

"It's been a gorgeous day. A good day for an election," Nichols said.

The polls are set to close at 7 p.m. Anyone who steps in line by that time is still eligible to vote.

D’Shawn Doughty is all smiles over Salisbury election

District 2 candidate and current City Council member D'Shawn Doughty was all smiles as he stood in the busy parking lot near Oak Ridge Baptist Church, a sign reading, "D'Shawn Doughty dedicated, determined, direct," in hand.

The 28-year-old is currently running for the District 2 Salisbury City Council seat against Wayne King.

"The day has been amazing. It's good to see people, voters, out here using their democratic right and exercising that power. We're connecting with people, saying hi. That's what makes it a good day," he said.

Doughty is no stranger to community involvement.

"I'm proud to say I've been involved with my community for years. But the beautiful thing is, this is a way to really connect with voters and have a reason to speak to them," he said. "I look forward to continuing to connect with them and being their voice on city council."

Voters share their thoughts after casting a ballot

Voters are showing no signs of slowing down as the 2023 city of Salisbury election presses on.

Around lunchtime today, there was a significant influx of voters at District 2's polling station, located inside Oak Ridge Baptist Church at 361 Tilghman Road. That is precisely where Salisbury resident Arletta Fitchett cast her ballot.

"I voted for Randy Taylor. He's the man," said Fitchett, who added she believes Taylor can fix the city if he is elected as mayor.

Unlike Fitchett, Rosie Prittingham cast her ballot for one of Taylor's opponents Megan Outten.

"I voted for Megan Outten," Prittingham said. "I think she's going to be a great mayor if she's elected."

Prittingham shared she believes Outten can tackle serious issues the city is currently facing, such as homelessness and the recent uptick in crime.

Salisbury resident Shirley Holland posed a question as she walked out of the polling station.

"Why don't (the candidates) get out into the neighborhoods and figure out what's going on? D'Shawn Doughty was the only one who came around way before the election. He didn't wait until the last minute," Holland said.

She noted how other candidates waited until mere weeks before the election to make an appearance in the surrounding community.

"They come around at the last minute, with a grin on their face, and ask you to vote for them. But I closed my front door right in their face," Holland said. "If I'm going to invite you to my house for Thanksgiving, I'm not going to wait until Thanksgiving."
