“Sam worked for the Municipal Marina for 15 years. He was a strong, humble man, great leader, and loved his job,” Commissioner Cynthia Garris said. “I’m honored to sponsor this naming, and believe ‘Sam’s Park’ is a very appropriate recommendation.”  In accordance with Resolution 2016-15 which outlines the process for the official naming of public parks and city facilities, Garris is sponsoring the request to name the public space.

The City will accept public input and suggestions for two weeks, concluding on Fri., Apr. 28.  A committee composed of one representative each from the Planning and Building, Public Works, and Communications Departments, will review the public input, summarize the suggestions, and make a recommendation to the City Manager.  The City Manager will offer the recommended name to the City Commission for consideration and adoption during the currently scheduled regular City Commission meeting on May 22.

According to the resolution, suggestions should consider neighborhood or geographical identification, natural or geological features, a place or event of historical or cultural significance, the articulated preference of residents of the neighborhood surrounding the space, or a deceased person or persons who has made significant and outstanding contributions of public service to the community.

The property needing a name is currently referred to as the Marina's North Lawn.

Sam R. Adukiewicz was the City of St. Augustine’s first Harbormaster. He implemented the Harbor Management Plan, which included establishing St. Augustine with three mooring fields, the City’s first pump out boat, and installation of a breakwater dock. In 2014, under Sam’s leadership, the Municipal Marina was awarded the designation of a Clean and Resilient Marina by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). This was the second marina in the State of Florida and the first municipality in Florida to receive this designation.

Suggestions will be gathered through an online survey, which will include providing a brief supportive statement as to why the name is suggested.  The survey is available online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SamsPark
