City of Tallahassee, Leon County announce closures, service changes for Thanksgiving

City of Tallahassee

The City of Tallahassee will observe the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23-24. Following are schedule changes for the week of Nov. 19-25 for solid waste customers living inside the Tallahassee city limits (blue week), StarMetro, the Animal Service Center and city-run community centers.

Celebrate Family DayOn Friday, Nov. 24, following Thanksgiving, celebrate Family Day with loved ones at the free community event at Railroad Square Art District from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tallahassee-Leon County is proud to be the first community in Florida to recognize Family Day, a holiday that celebrates the importance of family togetherness, support and love. Garbage and Recycling CollectionDuring the holiday week, some residential garbage, recycling, bulky items and yard waste customers will receive service one day later than their regularly scheduled service.

  • Tuesday customers ► No change

  • Wednesday customers ► No change

  • Thursday customers ► Friday, Nov. 24

  • Friday customers ► Saturday, Nov. 25

Customers are encouraged to set their collection bins behind the curb the night before their service day. Both containers returned to the home no later than the day after collection. StarMetro RoutesStarMetro, the City's mass transit system, will change its operations for the holiday. There will be no fixed route or Dial-A-Ride services offered on Thursday, Nov. 23. The following day, Friday, Nov. 24, StarMetro's fixed route service will operate on a Saturday schedule with night service, and Dial-A-Ride will operate from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. StarMetro's Call Center will also be open on Friday, Nov. 24, from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Animal ServicesThe Animal Service Center will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23-24. Normal hours will resume on Saturday, Nov. 25, with the center opening at 10 a.m. for appointments and walk-ins offered from 1-5 p.m. Customers needing more information, including photos of animals available for adoption and to report lost and found pets, may visit Talgov.com/Animals or contact the Animal Service Center at 850-891-2950.

City Animal Control will be available for emergency situations only on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 23-24, and can be reached via the Consolidated Dispatch Agency at 850-606-5800.

City-run Community CentersCommunity centers operated by the City of Tallahassee Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Affairs Department will be closed Thursday, Nov. 23, through Sunday, Nov. 26. Centers will resume normal hours on Monday, Nov. 27.

Leon County

The following holiday closures and service changes will occur in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday: Closed Thursday, Nov. 23

  • Leon County Solid Waste and Household Hazardous Waste Center

Closed Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24

  • Leon County offices

  • Leon County libraries

  • Leon County community centers

  • Leon County Animal Control

Remaining open for the holiday

  • Leon County Parks and Recreation facilities (parks, greenways, campgrounds and boat landings)

All LeRoy Collins Leon County Public Library branches will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, and will resume normal operating hours at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 25.The Leon County Solid Waste Management Facility, Rural Waste Centers and Household Hazardous Waste Center will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 23. Normal operating hours will resume on Friday, Nov. 24. For more information, call the Leon County Solid Waste Management Division at (850) 606-1800.Residential waste collection routes will be delayed one day for citizens whose normal pick-up day is during the holiday. Leon County Animal Control encourages residents to only use this service to report dangerous or aggressive dogs, sick or injured domestic animals and animal cruelty.
