City Utilities asks customers to turn heat down 2 degrees as they make repairs at plant

City Utilities is asking Springfieldians to take some small steps Friday to help conserve energy amid a brutal cold spell that has descended on the area.

In a news release Friday morning, spokesperson Joel Alexander said CU is making the request to reduce strain as it works to make repairs at its power station in southwest Springfield.

"The repair is due to a transmission line issue that required one of the turbines at John Twitty Energy Station to be taken offline," Alexander said in an email just after 9 a.m. "We are in the process of making these repairs and putting the turbine back in service. This is not expected to take long but during this time, we are asking all Electric and Natural Gas customers to conserve if possible."

CU is asking customers to take the following steps to reduce their energy consumption on Friday morning:

  • Turn down thermostat 2 degrees.

  • Wait until later in the day Friday to run clothes washer, dryer, and dishwasher.

  • Turn off any unnecessary lights and appliances.
