City's finance committee hears requests to appropriate funds

Cambridge City Council’s Finance Committee considered a number of requests from various departments, during its meeting this week.

City Utility Director Lou Thornton made a request to appropriate $220,000 from the Unappropriated Sewer Fund. Of those funds $20,000 would go to sewer supplies, $20,000 to sewer miscellaneous service, $50,000 to sewer vehicle maintenance, $10,000 to sewer miscellaneous, $60,000 to sewer capital improvement and $60,000 to sewer equipment.

"When we first put our budgets together in October of last year, it's very difficult to anticipate what's happened to the economy," Thornton explained. "As a result between the budget being from last year and the rate increases we were looking for not starting until this year. I anticipate this being probably the most difficult year on the water and sewer side without a doubt."

In addition, Thornton explained the department is dealing with numerous equipment issues, including the department's vac truck, which is in Cincinnati for repairs. The estimated cost of those repairs is between $55,000 and $60,000. Added to the cost will be the department's need to rent a vac truck until repairs are made at an additional cost of $13,600.

In other business:

  • Request from Fire Department Chief Jeff Deeks to appropriate $47, 619.05 Fire Fighter Grant Equipment.

  • Request from Police Chief Mark DeLancey to appropriate $20,000 to police equipment, which is a reimbursement for the school resource officers. A second request to appropriate $616.00 to police CPT training fund, which is another reimbursement from when cruisers were used during the paving on Wheeling Ave.

  • Request from Code Enforcement Director Kim Conrath to appropriate $1,217.49 to fire deposit for 93 Gomber Ave. fire scene.

  • Clerk of Council Sharon Gasser requested to transfer $500 from council legal advertising to travel and school. This is to pay for Council President Cowgill to attend the Ohio Municipal League annual conference.

  • A pair of requests from City Engineer Nick Cunningham. The first to authorization to submit an application to the Ohio Public Works Commission and second is a request to sign documents for Municipal Bridge inspection.

Council will act on these requests on Monday at 6 p.m. at the next council meeting.
