Civil rights leader John Lewis immortalized on USPS stamp

An Atlanta civil rights icon now has his face in a U.S. postage stamp.

The United States Postal Service unveiled a stamp featuring the late Congressman John Lewis Tuesday.

The stamp features a photo of Lewis taken for Time magazine in 2013. The selvage uses a 1963 photo of Lewis outside a workshop about a nonviolent protest in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

In a release, USPS said the stamp celebrates the “life and legacy” of Lewis.

Lewis spent more than 30 years in Congress “steadfastly defending and building on key civil rights gains that he had helped achieve in the 1960s,” the release read.

The civil rights trailblazer passed away in July 2020 after a battle with Stage IV pancreatic cancer at the age of 80.

Lewis’ stamp is one of seven debuted by the USPS. Others include skateboards and the Florida Everglades.
