Claremont woman killed when thrown from motorcycle

Sep. 29—CATAWBA — A passenger on a motorcycle was killed Tuesday when the 2000 Harley Davidson sideswiped another car. The driver of the motorcycle was charged with driving while impaired.

At approximately 4:50 p.m., the N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a critical injury collision in Catawba County on Kale Road near Hudson Chapel Road. Tony Travis, 43, of Catawba, was driving the motorcycle north on Kale Road, crossed the centerline, and sideswiped a southbound 2011 Honda CR-V. Travis and passenger Jacquelin Danielle York, 36, of Claremont, were both thrown from the motorcycle, according to the highway patrol.

York was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center (CVMC) before being airlifted to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Travis was also taken to CVMC with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Honda, Patricia Griffin, 67, of Statesville, and a 67-year-old passenger were not injured.

Additional charges are pending the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Catawba County District Attorney's Office.

Kale Road was closed in the area for approximately three hours during the on-scene investigation.
