Clark’s big night sends Hilton Head Christian football back to championship game
The second week of high school football playoffs in South Carolina are in the books. Her eis how Lowcountry teams fared on Friday night:
Hilton Head Christian 42, Pinewood Prep 30: After a year’s absence, Hilton Head Christian is headed back to the state championship.
Quarterback Dylan Clark threw three touchdown passes and ran for three as the Eagles defeated Pinewood in the semifinals of the SCISA 3A playoffs. Hilton Head Christian advances to the championship game and will play Wilson Hall at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Charleston Southern.
It is the fourth title appearance in the past five seasons for HHCA, which is going for its seventh state championship in school history. Hilton Head Christian won back-to-back titles in 2020-21.
The Eagles jumped out to a 14-0 lead before Pinewood got on the board with a field goal. HHCA increased the lead to 21-3 in the second quarter on Clark’s TD pass to AJ Houpt. Pinewood answered with a pair of TD passes from Will Watson and Asa Windham to cut it to 21-16 at halftime.
HHCA led 28-24 going into the fourth quarter before Clark hit Tyshon Mansell to make it 35-24. Pinewood cut it to 35-30 on Windham’s TD pass to Troy Dandridge.
But Clark sealed it with a TD run with three minutes left.
Crestwood 44, Beaufort 0: Javion Martin threw three touchdown passes as the Crestwood knocked off the defending 3A champions on Friday night.
Crestwood will travel to Brookland-Cayce for the third round of the 3A Lower State playoffs.
Azarian Yates added two touchdown runs for Crestwood, and Seneca Moore also had a TD run.
It was the first time Beaufort has been shut out since losing to Summerville 17-0 in 2013. The Eagles finish the season at 7-5.
Williamsburg Academy 41, Beaufort Academy 6: Williamsburg Academy scored 34 points in the first half to earn a spot in the SCISA 2A championship game.
Williamsburg will play Bethesda at noon on Saturday at Charleston Southern. Beaufort Academy finishes the season at 7-6.
Lee Academy 35, Thomas Heyward 19: Lee Academy defeated the Rebels for the second straight year in the playoffs ro earn a spot in the SCISA Class A championship
Lee Academy will play Patrick Henry at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at Charleston Southern.
It was the fourth straight year the two teams have met in the playoffs with the other three coming in championship games. Thomas Heyward won in 2020-21 while the Cavaliers won the last two.
