Clark posts top-three finishes in NCAA track

Jun. 15—EUGENE, Ore. — University of Alabama runner Tamara Clark, who starred at High Point Central, came close as Cambrea Sturgis of North Carolina A&T swept the women's 100 and 200 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday at the University of Oregon.

Sturgis edged ahead in the last 30 meters and edged Clark in the 200. Sturgis was clocked in 22.12 seconds and nipped Clark by .05.

In the 100, Clark was third as Sturgis won in a meet and collegiate record 10.74 seconds and edged Twanisha Terry of Southern Cal by .05 seconds.

Clark was also a member of the Alabama team that finished sixth in the 4x100 relay won by Southern Cal. N.C. A&T was third.

Clark has met the Olympic Trials qualifying standard in the 100 and 200. The Olympic Trials are slated June 18-27, also at the University of Oregon.

The first round of the women's 100 is scheduled Friday at 9:37 p.m. EST., with semis and finals on Saturday. The first round of the 200 is scheduled June 24.

Among those expected to compete in the trials, Clark owns the third-best time in the 200 and the sixth-best time in the 100.

The top three finishers in each event make the Olympic team.

HITOMS TAME DISCO TURKEYS

THOMASVILLE — The HiToms belted 11 hits, took advantage of seven walks and crushed the Carolina Disco Turkeys 12-2 in an exhibition game Saturday night at Finch Field.

WIth the score tied 2-2, the HiToms then scored 10 runs in two innings. Colby Wilkerson keyed a five-run fourth by lifting a bases-loaded hit to left. The HiToms scored five runs on four hits an inning later.

LOCAL RACING BOWMAN GRAY STADIUM

WINSTON-SALEM — TIm Brown and John Holleman split wins in a pair of 25-lap races for the featured Modified division Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Brown led all of the first race in extending his track record to 92 victories. Holleman won for the first time.

Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg finished 10th in the first race and third in the second.

Jacob Creed and Michael Adams won 20-lap Sportsman races. Spencer Martin of Wallburg was ninth in the first race and third in the second while Braden Mills of Wallburg was 14th in the first and 12th in the second. Mitch Gales of Thomasville was 11th and 13th.

Billy Gregg of Lexington prevailed in a 50-lap race that is the longest of the season for the Street Stock division. Christian Joyce of Trinity was 10th.

Brandon Brendle and Robert Strmiska were the Stadium Stock winners.

HIGH SCHOOLS BASEBALL

TRIAD — Four area teams made the NCHSAA baseball playoffs. The brackets were released Sunday, and play will begin today at the higher seeds.

In the 2A West, No. 16 Ledford (10-3) will visit No. 1 North Davidson (11-4), while No. 10 Oak Grove (10-3) will travel to No. 7 Madison (9-3). Both games are scheduled to start at 6 p.m.

In the 3A West, No. 6 Southwest Guilford (14-0) will host No. 11 Sun Valley (11-3). That game will be at 7 p.m.

In the 4A West, No. 16 Ragsdale (9-5) will travel to No. 1 Providence (12-2). That game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.

GREENSBORO — High Point Central's Mallory Cook and Olivia Perez qualified for the regional tournament after reaching the semifinals of last week's Metro 4A Conference doubles championship at Grimsley.

Cook/Perez, who earned a first-round bye, defeated Grimsley's Whitley Kemp and Mimi Marriott 6-4, 6-3 before falling to Page's Anna Schmedes and Abby Terrell 6-1, 6-0.

Schmedes/Terrell eventually went on to win the doubles title.

But by making their run to the semifinals, Cook and Perez qualified for the 4A Midwest Regional, which will be Friday and Saturday at Huntersville Hopewell.
