Clarksdale, Mississippi teen fatally shot in head

CLARKSDALE, Miss. — A teenager is dead after being shot in the head on Friday in Clarksdale, Mississippi, police say.

The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Jameion Chatman.

Clarksdale Assistant Police Chief, Vincent Ramirez, says Friday afternoon police were contacted by staff at Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center after the 17-year-old male gunshot victim was dropped off at the ER by two males in a private vehicle.

He was flown to Regional One Hospital in Memphis from the Medical Center but did not survive his injuries.

“We talked to the individuals that dropped the subject off at the ER and that’s where we learned it occurred on the 200 block of Spruce,” Ramirez said.

Ramirez says the victim was a passenger and neither of the males have been charged.

Police have no details on why the victim was in the 200 block of Spruce when the shooting happened but did confirm that multiple shots were fired.

“There’s several residences right there in that area,” Ramirez said. “At this point, we just know it happened in the 200 block.”

The 17-year-old was also a student at Clarksdale High School. Monday Clarksdale’s Municipal School District issued the following statement,

“We are profoundly saddened by the untimely loss of our scholar Jameion Chatman. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. We request everyone to respect their privacy as they grieve this loss.”

One mother says the pain never goes away after her son was murdered last year on his birthday.

“My son got killed July 29th on his birthday,” Lelia Perryman said. “I just want to tell the young man and the young lady whose son died, I’m truly sorry about your son. I’m truly sorry.”
