The Roosters restaurant next to the Green Tree Mall in Clarksville, Indiana, is a total loss after a fire early Monday morning.

Firefighters from Clarksville were first to arrive on the scene around 5 a.m., finding the building full of smoke, according to a release from Ken Conklin, town communication director. Firefighters from Jeffersonville and New Albany also assisted in fighting the blaze.

Clarksville Fire Chief Brandon Skaggs said the team had to switch to defensive operations due to heavy smoke and heat after their initial strategy to attack the fire wasn't working. The amount of furniture and equipment also made the situation difficult, Skaggs said.

“The building has one common attic space which allowed the fire to travel to the whole building,” said Skaggs. “The building has already suffered two collapses because of that, so we decided to go to defensive mode to protect our firefighters.”

No one was hurt in the fire, Skaggs said. The building at 1601 Greentree Blvd. was a "total loss" though.

“I hate this for our community because this is an important business and a popular community gathering space for local residents,” said Skaggs.  “Especially with March Madness coming up, this will be a major loss for the business and for our community.”
