If Dave Campbell's Texas Football is correct, Shallowater will take another step forward next season.

The annual magazine has the Mustangs at No. 11 in the preseason rankings for Class 3A Division I. DCTF predicts Shallowater will make the Region I final and fall to Brock, the outlet's pick to win the state championship.

That would be a round better than the Mustangs did in coach Rodney Vincent's first season. Shallowater reached the regional semifinals in 2021 before losing 50-25 to Whitesboro.

The Mustangs finished 10-3 and return 13 starters, including seven on offense. Shallowater's district foes are all different, with the team joining Amarillo River Road, Bushland, Dalhart and Muleshoe in 2-3A D-I. The Falcons are ranked No. 18.

Shallowater’s Kaleb Cox (22) celebrates a touchdown during the team’s high school football game against Denver City Friday, Oct. 22, 2021 at Todd Field in Shallowater, Texas.

Denver City is expected to win the district group Shallowater left. Denver City finished second to Shallowater last year and finished 6-4 after a bi-district loss. With four starters back on each side of the ball, Denver City is favored to beat out Brownfield for the District 1-3A D-I crown.

Division II

As they did last year, Abernathy, Idalou and Roosevelt are expected to battle for the district title. The three District 4-3A D-II foes begin ranked in the top 20.

Abernathy, which was runner-up to Roosevelt last season, is No. 12, Idalou is 13th and the Eagles are No. 19.

That means DCTF sees the Antelopes winning the title ahead of the others, with Stanton grabbed the final playoff spot. Littlefield, which moved down from D-I, and Coahoma round out the district.

But DCTF expects 3-3A D-II to rule the region, projecting Canadian to beat district rival Childress in the Region I final. Roosevelt beat Abernathy to win the region last year.
