Class 3A Saydel scores pair of run-rule wins over Baxter

Jul. 4—DES MOINES — The Baxter baseball team's four-game winning streak was snapped on Thursday at the hands of Class 3A Saydel.

The Eagles struck early and often during their 10-0, five-inning home win in non-conference play. Saydel scored four runs in the second, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game early.

The Bolts (6-12) were limited to two hits and one walk offensively. It was their first loss since June 16.

Cody Damman had one hit and one steal, Jake Travis doubled and Rory Heer walked once.

Travis (2-2) also started on the hill and went three innings, allowing eight runs — seven earned — on seven hits with two strikeouts, six walks and one hit batter. He took the loss.

Cael Shepley pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed two unearned runs on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.

Mason Hicks went the distance on the mound for Saydel (10-18), allowing two hits and striking out seven in five innings.

Holly Zahurones singled and was the only base runner for Baxter's softball team during Saydel's 10-0 home win on Thursday.

The Bolts (7-14) committed six errors and lost for the eighth time in nine games.

Saydel scored all 10 runs in the final four innings and ended things after six following back-to-back three-run innings.

Kinley Bethards (3-10) went the distance in the circle, allowing 10 runs — six earned — on 10 hits with five walks and one hit batter in 5 1/3 innings.

Dakota Lake struck out 13 Bolts in six innings and Cadence Dhabolt had three hits and three runs to lead the Eagles' offense. Saydel (23-7) has won 11 straight games.
