Class B Roundup: L/L-M, Carrington get R3 tourney wins

May 22—NEW ROCKFORD, N.D. — The LaMoure/Litchville-Marion baseball team opened their Region 3 tournament in a big way with an 11-1 win over New Rockford-Sheyenne on Monday, May 22, at New Rockford High School.

The game was tight until the Loboes blew it open in the fifth inning as they turned a 1-1 game into a 7-1 game. The Loboes (10-1) took the lead for good when Tate Mart stole home and then one pitch later, Anthony Hanson hit a single and Dylan Carlson scored on an error to make it 3-1. The Loboes hit three more singles in the inning to stretch the lead out.

After the Black Sox (3-11) opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, they only managed three more base runners. On the mound, the Loboes' Tate Mart threw six innings, giving up two hits, one unearned run, walking three and striking out 11 hitters. On the other side, the Black Sox used three pitchers with the starter being Keaton Cudworth who pitched five innings giving up six earned runs on 10 hits while walking one and striking out three hitters.

The Loboes scored four runs in the sixth to put the game away. Both teams struggled defensively as the Black Sox had six errors and the Loboes had three errors.

The Carrington Cardinals scored four runs in the fourth and fifth innings on their way to a 12-2 win over Nelson County/Midkota at the Region 3 Tournament.

The Cardinals (13-4) scored three runs in the first inning with only one of them being earned. The Mustangs (3-12) clawed one back in the second and another in the third to cut the deficit to 3-2. However, the Cardinals responded with one in the bottom of the third to give them some breathing room and push the lead out to 4-2. The Cardinals added four more in the fourth to push the lead out to 8-2 and then four in the fifth to end the game at 12-2. Out of the 12 Cardinals runs, only nine of them were earned.

The Cardinals held the Mustangs to three hits in the win, with two of them coming from Kyle Johnson. On the mound, the Cardinals starter was Josh Bickett who went three innings giving up one earned run on three hits, while walking three and striking out three. The Mustangs starter was Ross Thompson who went 4.1 giving up nine earned runs on 11 hits while walking three runs and striking out two hitters.

The Cardinals return to the diamond at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23, when they take on LaMoure/Litchville-Marion.
