Police inspect school - find nothing after school canceled in Bucyrus due to bomb threat

UPDATE: After the buildings of the Bucyrus School District were inspected by the police, the Bucyrus City Schools Superintendent announced that the buildings were clear, and the district was getting ready to resume classes on Thursday.

Bucyrus City Schools were evacuated as a result of a bomb threat Wednesday morning. The district informed the public via its Facebook page. The police are investigating on scene.

“We received a bomb threat early this morning right when the kids were getting to school,” said Superintendent Robert Britton. “We obviously called the Bucyrus City Police Department immediately.”

Britton said he was notified about the threat at 7:25 a.m., and the threat was from an anonymous source. The police department came out and recommended the district evacuate the building.

“At that point we evacuated the building and canceled classes,” Britton said.

Unknown which school was targeted

He said it is unknown which of the schools the threat was intended for, and for that reason classes for the entire district, including the elementary school, were canceled while police searched buildings.

“We decided we were going to cancel all classes for the day,” Britton said.

The students were evacuated to the Holy Trinity Catholic School, which is a facility relatively close to the school where the students can reunite with their families. Students who drive were released from school to return home, said the district on its Facebook page.

“They will not be permitted to enter the building,” said the district. “We appreciate your patience during this extremely challenging situation!”

Bucyrus Police Department dispatcher Jennifer Gerger said no additional information is available at this point, as the officers are searching the building and investigating the threat.

“It’s very fluent right now,” Gerger said.

Wynford Local Schools in an external lockdown for the day

Additionally, Wynford Local School District announced on its Facebook page its schools will be in an external lockdown mode Wednesday due to its proximity to Bucyrus City Schools.

Wynford Superintendent Forrest Trisler said external lockdown means all the exterior school doors are locked, but classes run as normal.

“No threats have been made,” said Trisler.
