Nov. 17—MARSHALL — The annual Conference for Young Writers will be Jan. 5 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The conference is for students in grades 3-8. Participants will attend three hands-on learning sessions in different areas of writing. The day will start with Peter Bloedel, professor of theater, musician and juggler. The Jolly Twirlers Square Dance Club will be teaching the art of square dancing to singles and couples of all ages. The lessons are from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays Nov. 22 and 29, at the Willmar Community Center, The Jolly Twirlers dancers serve as mentors for new dancers learning the different square dance "calls." Curbside Craft Kits: available between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on three Thursdays in December. Pre-registration required at 320-262-5288 as supplies will be limited. Dec. 1, Holiday String Art, Dec. 8, Cork Ornaments (Reindeer and Tree) and Dec. 15, Olaf Snowman Treat. Cost for all three kits is $5. If you would like to purchase an individual kit, specify when registering and they are $2 each. There will be a guided instruction class at 2:30 p.m. each Thursday.

Santa Gnome Wreath: Dec. 13, 3 p.m. or Dec. 21, 4 p.m., $8, pre-registration required. Come and make this cheery gnome wreath. It can be added to your Curbside Crafts (all four for $10).

Willmar Community Education has several art-related classes scheduled. Pre-registration is required for all the classes. Cooking classes are in the Food and Drink calendar in the Thursday paper.

Rock painting: Have you found any painted rocks outside around Willmar? Learn how to create your own! Paints, brushes and rocks will be provided for each class. The classes are from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Saturdays, at Jefferson Learning Center, ages 5 and up; those ages 5-11 will need to sign up with a responsible adult; $5 first person, $3 for each additional family member; instructor Sarah Miller. The last class scheduled for this fall is Mandala dotting on Dec. 10. We'll talk about common household items you can use to start mandala dotting and create beautiful designs in class.

Milan Village Arts classes have been scheduled with the complete schedule on the website. Members receive a discount on tuition. Supply fees are paid to the instructor at the end of class. Norwegian knife making, five-day workshop: Jan. 20-24, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; instructor Jon Roisen; beginner to experienced, minimum age 15; hone your skills using more advanced techniques, make either a Telemark-style knife or a knife consisting of multiple traditional materials used in Nordic blades; tuition $245, supplies $120; registration deadline Jan. 1.

Watercolor techniques: Jan. 28-29, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor Katia Andreeva; beginner and above, minimum age 14; designed for beginners and intermediate students to learn how to paint still life; tuition $140, supply list provided on registration; registration deadline Jan. 7.
