Sep. 21—MARSHALL — The 28th annual Conference for Young Artists will be Oct. 26 at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The conference is for students in grades K-8.
The keynote speaker is ventriloquist and comedian Kevin Horner. It will be followed by three hands-on learning sessions in different areas of art. Fees are $40 per student, $10 per adult. Register online at

Beginner art classes: Sept. 22, 29, Oct. 6, 13; 1 to 2 p.m., $2 per class; four-week class for all art abilities,using a variety of art mediums. Each week will build on the previous weeks. Pre-registration required. Participants grades 3-5 must be accompanied by an adult.
Community Thread Studio: Oct. 4 and 11, 1 to 3 p.m. or 4 to 6 p.m., $5, grades 4 and up, pre-registration required. Learn the basics to running a sewing machine to make your own clothing or home items. Oct. 11 class will create a pillowcase. Supply list will be provide when you register.
Milan Village Arts classes have been scheduled with the complete schedule on the website. Members receive a discount on tuition. Supply fees are paid to the instructor at the end of class. Gudbrandsal style rosemaling: Oct. 15, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; instructor Clarice Dieter; beginner and above, minimum age 15; paint a round box in the Gudbrandsal style; tuition $55, box information and supply list upon enrollment, advance purchases required; registration deadline Sept. 24.
Wood bowl turning: Oct. 22-23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; instructor Steve Mullins; beginner and above, minimum age 16; learn the basic skills needed to turn a wooden bowl on a lathe from "green" unseasoned wood; tuition $230, supplies $45; registration deadline Oct. 8.
Weaving rugs: Nov. 4-6, Friday evening through Sunday; instructor Diana Soehren; learn the basics of preparing fabrics, choosing a design, warping and beginning to weave on Friday; continue to work on their projects Saturday and Sunday; members who have taken this workshop have access to the Loom Room to work on their own projects; tuition $90, supplies $10 or more; registration deadline Oct. 22.
Picture Framing: fall dates to be determined, 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, instructor Brian Wolf returns from Germany twice a year to teach this class, beginners, minimum age 16; members who have taken this workshop have access to the Framing Studio to work on their own projects; tuition $105.
Open carving night: carvers of all persuasions are invited to meet from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the school to carve and network. Free.
Studios: The silver studio, weaving studio and framing studio are open to all those that have taken classes and are MVAS members. Some fees apply.
