With its classic French fare, this downtown Wilmington restaurant is a perennial favorite

A lot has changed along Market Street since 2001. Businesses have come and gone, especially in terms of restaurants. But one of the area’s popular eateries, Caprice Bistro, has remained in place near the Cape Fear River -- and been faithful in offering classic French fare in an intimate setting.

Authentic bistro experience: The owners have good reason for their authenticity. Theirry and Patricia Moity were both born in France. They owned restaurants in New York City and Charlotte before moving to Wilmington and opening Caprice in the historic building at 10 Market St.

What to expect: “It's a nice, little cozy traditional French bistro," said Patricia Moity. Look for the bistro-style dining area downstairs and a lounge-style dining room and bar upstairs. It's a setting that led to the restaurant being named one of the most romantic in the country by Open Table in 2018. The menu that includes mussels and frites, beef Bourguignon and escargot in a creamy Roquefort sauce helped, too.

The secret to success: "Consistency," said Theirry Moity. "And teamwork." The couple's partnership, with him in the kitchen and Patricia as host, has been a key to longevity. The owners are in their 70s now, and they have grandchildren nearby, but they aren't planning to go anywhere soon. "We are still here," he said. "We may retire eventually. But not today."
