Classified documents found in Biden's office: What we know

The revelation Monday that classified documents were found in an office Joe Biden used before his presidential campaign echoed the discovery of documents seized at Mar-a-Lago after former President Donald Trump left the White House. The U.S. attorney in Chicago, John Lausch, a Trump appointee, will investigate the Biden records.

One thing to know: Biden said Tuesday he was surprised to learn classified documents were in the office and he doesn't know what they contain. He said the records were sent immediately to the National Archives and he is cooperating with a Justice Department review of the documents.

• House Republicans plan to investigate what they contend is different treatment between GOP and Democratic presidents. Trump sought to compare the two cases.

• What type of documents? The Biden documents, according to the White House, were found Nov. 2 in a "locked closet" while the president’s personal attorneys were packing files at the office he used from 2017 to 2020. The administration hasn’t described the quantity or type of documents, but the White House said it was a “small number.”

• The Justice Department has declined to comment while Lausch's initial review is nearing completion, a person familiar with the matter said. The person, who is not authorized to speak publicly on the issue, described the review as moving toward an inflection point in which the attorney general would decide how to proceed.

4 more storms heading toward California in next 10 days

California is nowhere near done with the recent string of storms that have killed at least 17 people since last month, driven thousands from their homes and submerged roads and communities under flood waters. Four more atmospheric rivers are heading toward the Golden State in the next 10 days, Gov. Gavin Newsom's office tweeted Tuesday, warning residents to "continue to prepare for heavy rainfall, extreme winds, and dangerous conditions.'' After a brief Tuesday night respite, the next storm is expected to arrive Wednesday in Northern California and also impact the Pacific Northwest. Calls of 'no amnesty' for Sunday's pro-Bolsonaro rioters

“No amnesty! No amnesty! No amnesty!” was the rallying cry for thousands of Brazilians who streamed into the streets of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo this week. The words are a demand for retribution against supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro who stormed Brazil’s capital Sunday, and those who enabled the rampage. Brazilian police on Monday had already rounded up roughly 1,500 rioters, with some caught in the act of trashing Brazil’s Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace, while the majority were detained the following morning at an encampment in Brasilia. The Federal Police’s press office told The Associated Press the force plans to indict at least 1,000 people, and has begun transferring them to the nearby Papuda prison. Read more

Are gas stoves a thing of the past?

A federal agency is reportedly considering a ban on gas stoves on the heels of rising concern about harmful indoor air pollutants emitted by the appliances. In an interview with Bloomberg, U.S. Consumer Product Safety commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. said gas stove usage is a “hidden hazard," which can cause health issues, including respiratory problems in children. The report said the agency plans “to take action” to address the indoor pollution caused by stoves. The CPSC has been considering action on gas stoves since the fall. In October, Trumka recommended the agency seek public comment on the hazards associated with gas stoves after pollutants were linked to asthma and worsening respiratory conditions. Read more

Highlights from Golden Globes 2023

Tuesday night featured the prime-time return of the Golden Globes and more wins for a Hollywood legend. Steven Spielberg's semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film "The Fabelmans" won best drama and best director at the 80th Golden Globe Awards, hosted by comedian Jerrod Carmichael.
