Incumbent Republican Congresswoman Claudia Tenney easily fended off Democratic challenger Steven Holden in the newly redrawn 24th congressional district, which surrounds Monroe County and includes much of central New York and the Thousand Islands region.

With more than half of precincts reporting late Tuesday night, Tenney had taken a 30-point lead over Holden.

"I sincerely thank the voters of New York's 24th Congressional District who have put their faith and trust in me," she said in a statement released Tuesday night. "I will always be a tenacious and compassionate advocate for our region in Congress."

Tenney, who lives in Canandaigua, served two non-consecutive terms in the former 22nd district to the east of Syracuse. That district was among those most affected by the decennial redistricting.

She campaigned on a conservative platform of deregulation, Second Amendment rights and opposition to abortion. She was an early supporter of former president Donald Trump and has joined other conservative Republicans in questioning the validity of the 2020 presidential election, which he lost.

Holden, a political novice and retired lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, campaigned on his military background and highlighted the need to protect American democratic values, including fair elections.
